Move Over, Slow Down: A Life-Saving Campaign

As you drive along our state's roads, it's easy to get caught up in the moment and forget about the people working hard behind the scenes to keep our roads safe. But with a simple gesture, you can prevent another tragedy from occurring. That gesture is moving over or slowing down when approaching emergency or work zones.

Emergency responders, including those who assist disabled vehicles and provide lifesaving care to crash victims, risk their lives every day on the side of our roads. According to Shelly Baldwin, Director of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC), these brave individuals need our help to stay safe while doing their job. That's why it's crucial that motorists approach emergency zones or work zones with caution.

State law requires drivers approaching an emergency or work zone to move over one lane if possible or slow down by at least 10 miles per hour below the posted speed limit. This simple act allows these responders to do their job without worrying about their own safety, and it ensures that our roadways remain safe for everyone.

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is partnering with other organizations to conduct a 'Move Over, Slow Down' campaign starting this weekend and running through April. Emphasis patrols will be conducted throughout the state over the next two months to educate drivers on the importance of RCW 46.61.212 - a law that requires motorists to move over or slow down when approaching emergency or work zones.
